66^th Anniversary of the “Victory Day” celebrated by the Hellenic Russian Society

The Hellenic Russian Society celebrated the 66^th Anniversary of the Allied Forces Victory, in the aftermath of the Second World War, at the IANOS Cultural Center of Athens, on the 9^th of May 2011. The ceremony was held in commemoration of millions of Soviet soldiers and civilians fallen in the Orient Front. Distinguished representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, as well as representatives of associations and members of the cultural and academic community were also present, together with a big number of members and friends of the Hellenic Russian Society.

Opening the ceremony, Ambassador ad h. Kyriakos Rodoussakis, President of the Society and Vladimir Zatseping, Political Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Athens referred to the parallel and common struggles of both Greek and Russian people during the Second World War. Mr. Zatseping spoke more particularly about the harsh conditions under which the German- Soviet War was waged at the mercy of the grim russian winter. As Mr. Zatseping also mentioned the Russians do not forget the resistance of the Greek people against the Nazi offensive in the Balkan area, something which immensely contributed to the fatal delay of the BARBAROSA operation.
